Real Madrid's Bellingham set to miss 12 weeks after shoulder surgery

Jude Bellingham delayed surgery until after Real Madrid's campaign at the Club World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals. (EPA Images pic) MADRID : Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham is expected to miss up to 12 weeks recovering from a shoulder operation after the Spanish giants said Wednesday he had successfully undergone surgery. 'Our player Jude Bellingham has undergone successful surgery for a recurrent left shoulder dislocation,' said Real Madrid in a statement. 'Bellingham will now begin a period of rehabilitation prior to his return to recovery work.' While Madrid did not specify the expected length of his recovery time, Spanish media have reported it will take around 12 weeks for him to return to action. Bellingham has been struggling with shoulder discomfort after dislocating it in a La Liga match in November 2023, and playing with a brace under his shirt since then. The England midfielder held off on the operation until after Madrid's participation in the Club World Cup this summer, with Xabi Alonso's side reaching the semi-finals. Bellingham is set to miss the La Liga visit to face rivals Atletico Madrid in late September, as well as the club's first two Champions League matches. The 22-year-old midfielder should be back in action by the time Madrid host Barcelona in the first Clasico of the season in late October. 'I've got the point where… I'm fed up with the brace, and having to tug on it and having (other) players tug on it, and it rearranging all the time,' said Bellingham during the Club World Cup. The midfielder will also miss World Cup qualifiers with England against Andorra and Serbia on Sept 6 and 9 respectively.

‘A beast' – New Barcelona signing hailed during Vissel Kobe clash

A member of the summer recruitment list at La Liga champions Barcelona has on Sunday come in for widespread praise online. The player in question? Joan García. Goalkeeper Joan was for his part afforded a first-ever appearance in Barcelona colours this evening. After the Blaugrana made the trip to Japan for the first leg of their pre-season tour of Asia, they kicked things into gear with a friendly clash against Vissel Kobe. The aforementioned Joan was in from the off for the fixture, taking to the pitch in his new no.1 jersey. And as alluded to above, across his 45-minute stint, the 24-year-old left an altogether positive impression on his new club's fans. En route to an eventual 3-1 victory, Joan showed off his stellar reflexes on more than one occasion. This came by way of a number of impressive saves. The Barca faithful, in turn, have since moved to lavish praise on their side's summer addition, with Joan having been labelled a 'beast' online: Conor Laird – GSFN

Girona emerge as favourites to land Atlético Madrid star

Girona are closing on a loan deal for an out-of-favour member of the attacking ranks at La Liga rivals Atlético Madrid. That's according to journalist Alex Luna, citing French outlet L'Equipe, who point towards Thomas Lemar as the player in question. Former Monaco man Lemar is widely expected to be on the move before the summer is out. No longer part of the plans of boss Diego Simeone following another injury-ravaged campaign in 2024/25, the Frenchman is understood to be drawing interest from a number of Spanish clubs. Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo are two such sides considering a loan swoop for Lemar with a view to next season. As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media this weekend is anything to go by, then the 29-year-old's most likely landing spot appears to be Girona. As per a report from Alex Luna: 'According to L'Equipe, Girona are the team closest to securing Thomas Lemar on loan. There is also interest from Rayo Vallecano and Celta.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Barca's Ter Stegen faces three months out after back surgery

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to undergo back surgery on a long-term problem and will miss three months as a result, the Germany international said on Thursday. The Spanish champions signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia this summer, who is expected to become the team's first choice, with Wojciech Szczesny as back-up. "Today is a personally difficult day for me. Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain," said Ter Stegen on social media network Instagram. "After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery. "After my last operation on my back, I returned to the pitch after 66 days-almost two months... this time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks." Spanish media reported Barcelona were hoping to sell Ter Stegen, 33, who signed for the club in 2014, to help register new signings Garcia and Marcus Rashford. Last summer a long-term injury to defender Andreas Christensen allowed Barcelona to use a La Liga loophole to register playmaker Dani Olmo on a temporary basis after he signed from RB Leipzig. "Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear," continued Ter Stegen. "Don't worry -- I'll be back." rbs/gj
